What is fiber optics?
Fiber optics are very thin threads of plastic or glass, through which digital data is transmitted in the form of light. A fiber optic cable contains 10s or even 100s of very thin optical fibers, with a diameter smaller than that of a single hair! The data transmission speed over fiber optics is enormous, since data travels in the form of light.
How do fiber optics work?
At one end of the optical fiber, there is the transmitter and at the other, the receiver. The transmitter converts a computer's digital data into digital light waves. The receiver decodes digital light waves into digital data. Digital light waves travel at the speed of light through the optical fiber, with successive reflections off the walls of the optical fiber.
What are the advantages of fiber optics?
- They can carry a much larger volume of data at the same time than copper cable.
- Data transfer is faster.
- The data travelling through them is less vulnerable to interference.
- They are much thinner and lighter than copper wire.
- Data is transmitted digitally: so faster encoding - decoding of data and nearly no data loss.
What are the disadvantages of fiber optics?
- They are more expensive.
- They are more difficult to install.
- They are more fragile.
- We cannot bend them too much, we have to install them with a slight inclination, otherwise there will be losses.
